A Closed Book (2010)Looking back on your past could cost you your future
The film A Closed Book is adapted by Gilbert Adair from his own book of the same name. The film is listed as a drama and thriller and it is directed by Raoul Ruiz. The lead male character is Sir Paul Napier (Tom Conti), a rich writer and art historian who got blind in a recent car accident. He wants to write his last book: his autobiography as his masterpiece. Due to his blindness, he needs assistance for both living and writing his beloved book. The lead female character comes into the picture at this point. Jane Ryder (Daryl Hannah), a former painter and a banker from USA, is hired by Sir Paul as his assistant but as the story unfolds, Sir Paul visits all the places from his past and he becomes more and more demanding in his crooked, old and gloomy mansion. While Jane tries to put up with her boss’s endless demands and his overgrowing dependency on her, we see the bitterness and cold mistrust in their relationship. After some time, we start learning about Jane’s actualy motives for getting this job. She had been hiding something from the beginning. As for the performance of the actors, Tom Conti who have actually gone blind recently projects the contradiction and misery of a cold blooded Sir. Daryl Hannah sometimes feels off the beat in comparison with Conti but she still manages well considering the slow pace of the movie and the style of the director. There are some very clever and striking dialogues and the movie gives more of a subtle theatre feeling than a shiny cinema feeling. If you like that sort of feeling, some good acting and a slow to medium pace drama, it is an enjoyable movie for you.
