DC Showcase: The Spectre (2010)
This short film is an animation which gives an introductory insight on the supernatural hero The Spectre. It is a crime mystery and hints at future mystery horror feature possibilities. The animation is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, who has worked as a storyboard artist and a director in well known shows like Avatar, Justice League. The story of the short animation is written by Steve Niles, who has a remarkable reputation in writing horror stories very well in comics. The story takes place in the 70’s, everything in the animation reminds us of those years: even the shooting angles, the music and a funny 70s special effect is included to give that feeling. A very well known film producer is mysteriously murdered and Jim Corrigan, the person who the hero Spectre is based on decides to help with the case. Once he gets involved, we see how he gets hold of all three criminals and how they are brought before justice. As mentioned before, this short film is a short insight into the Spectre’s world. It looks very promising for a long feature film. Gary Cole is the voice of Jim Corrigan/The Spectre and he does an amazing job with his voice-acting. Alyssa Milano as Aimee Brenner, daughter of the murdered film producer is sweet and charming with her voice. The annoying, narrow minded, stereotypical police captain is Jon Polito and his voice suits that annoying character very well. This short film is released in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths DVD as a bonus material. If you are a fan of animation, comicbook heroes, mystery, crime and horror; you will love that fact that all those thrilling mysteries and action is handled in an animation with characters based on comicbook novels. This short film is a must see and it fires up all the hope for a feature film.
