Possession (2009)Love possesses us
The third film of both the directors Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist is the drama, romance, thriller and mystery film Possession. These directors worked together in their previous films and their ability to work in harmony with each other can be seen throughout the movie. Unlike their previous films, Possesion is more of a Hollywood film with its Hollywood based actors, than an independent international film. In the film Jessica (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is the lead female. Her husband Ryan (Michael Landes) and brother in law Roman (Lee Pace of Pushing Daisies)have a car accident and they both end up in coma with a very little chance for recovery. However, the brother in law wakes up form the coma and claims that he is the husband. First, Jessica gets confused and angry at Roman but somehow Roman manages to get her used to the idea. Vulnerable, exhausted and sad, Jessica is ready to be convinced of the fact that her husband’s spirit can live in another body. But is that the truth? As the story continues, the film becomes darker and passes to the horror side. Moreover, the film has two endings. The one in theatres has this darker ending but there is a nearly 30 minute change in the alternate one which is in the DVD as an extra. As for the peformances, the shining star of the film is definitely Lee Pace: our waking coma guy claiming to be the husband. Sarah Michelle Gellar is well but not in her best acting in this film. She is good enough to convince the audience though. Also, the plot has some weaknesses such as the wife’s readiness to believe in a very unlikely event in such a short time and without much confirmation. But if you can overlook a couple of things like that, it is an interesting movie to watch.
