The Descent: Part 2 (2009)Fear runs deeper
The sequel of The Descent (which was directed by Neil Marshall) picks up from one alternative ending of the original. The first Descent film had two endings, one for UK and one for the US, which was an open ending. Due to the commercial success of The Descent, Jon Harris directed the sequel using the opportunity the US ending presented. In Descent, one group of explorers were lost and stuck in a cave and they were tormented by the predetors. Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) who had managed to escape the claustrophobic caves is deeply traumatised and and bloody. With no clear recollection of the horrifying events that had happened in the caves, she is found by the police and the annoying sheriff Vainess(Gavan O’Herlihy) and his deputy Rios (Krysten Cummings) do not believe her story. Checking the blood on her, they find that it belongs to the Juno (Natalie Jackson Mendoza) in her group, they are very skeptical about Sarah’s story, they think there is something more sinister going on and Sarah has a part in it. They a rescue party including Greg (Joshua Dallas) as the mountain climber, with Dan (Douglas Hodge) and Cath (Anna Skellern) and Sarah is forced back to the caves with them in Appalachian Mountains to locate her friends and find the truth about the events. Expectedly, the rocks collapse again and they are trapped in the caves, so they go deeper and further in the caves. On their way, they find out about Sarah’s friends and the terrifying things restart. The sequel surprisingly falls under the category of “successful sequels”, it has more or less the same quality of the first film. The character development and acting fit well, the terrorizing scenes and jump scenes are embedded naturally. The fans of the horror, thriller, adventure genre will find this film very entertaining and luckily, people who have not seen the first movie do not have to watch it to understand this one.
