We Live in Public (2009)
The award winning DiG!'s director Ondi Timoner made a documentary and collected the Grand Jusr Prize in Sundance Film Festival. Her awarded documentary "We Live in Public" mainly focuses on the media, mostly internet, visionary Josh Harris. He was an entrepreneur who had foreseen the importance and effect of internet, mostly web sites and social networks, on today's population's lives. Growing up in a TV world, he realized how the newly developing and spreading internet facilities will dominate the world just like TV did for a long time. Then he created an internet TV network site: pseudo.com, founded the first internet market research company, Jupiter Communications. Indeed he was an entrepreneur but he also thought about the future results of the expanding use of internet. He made very controversial, and sometimes illegal social experiments to demonstrate how the extensive use of internet makes the world "even smaller than the TV does" and how easily people can give up and sacrifice their privacy for the addictive and personally out of control use of internet or for the enourmous fame its universality, extensity can bring. Trying to show these, he also experimented on himself and after years of being a millionaire pioneer, he had a mental breakdown and got broke. The director Ondi Timoner, who was one of the participants in one of his online 24 hour surveillance experiments had been collecting and shooting videos for this documentary for nearly 10 years. She had been taping him, his life, his experiments, collecting his own videos since he had obsessively been documenting his life, and along with the impact of internet on communities, she presents the rise and fall of Josh Harris, which includes his self imposed exile and hopeful return with Operator 11 only to find out that Youtube had already done what Operator 11 was supposed to do, his journey beginning from mid 1990s to this very day. This documentary sets a light on the internet craze from the eyes of an early innovator and it should be seen.
