When Soldiers Cry (2010)
The first movie of the director Joe Black is an intense drama. When Soldiers Cry is a war movie which takes place in 1965, Vietnam War. In the jungle in South Vietnam, the American soldiers are trapped and one of them, Private David M. Church (Douglas Szczesny Jr.), loses his conscious. When he wakes up, he finds out that all the others were killed and he was alone in the middle of the jungle. Since the only thing pushing him to survive, to keep going on for finding the landing zone is the promise he made to his family that he would go back no matter what, he tries to find his way out of the jungle and encounters a Vietnam soldier whom he kills for revenge and an American Tunnel Rat called Han (Jess Weber). He tries to help him, carry him to the landing zone as well as his own tired body when he comes across more and more American soldiers who needs help. He feels desperate and tries to be a hero by helping anyone possible. As the drama increases every second with the struggle and desperation, their misery and loss increases as well. The film is a typical war movie with weapons, killings, dilemma, hope and pain. Unfortunately, the directing and acting is not very strong and it is a bit sketchy from time to time. Apparently the film has a very limited budget but it would not be an excuse for poor acting. The plot is better than the acting, it is very engaging as a war drama and the war movie fans would like to know what happens in the end, and if Private Church can save others, make it to the landing zone, back home and to the loved ones.
